It was New York Fashion Week, 2007.

I sat front row at Karl Lagerfeld’s show, notepad on my lap, every inch the unassuming journalist. What I did not realize was that my vintage blond mink coat, a 1950s beauty with embroidery fit for royalty, had just made me public enemy number one with the fashion police.

The temperature outside was brutal, and I wore it for warmth, not shock value. Still, whispers flew. Fingers pointed. My coat may as well have been a neon sign flashing vintage animal product in ten-inch letters.

I scribbled away, unaware that my outerwear had caused a minor diplomatic incident. And thank goodness PETA did not burst in with a gallon of red paint.

After the Runway

When the show ended, I slipped into Smith & Wollensky, a Devil Wears Prada institution, and ordered a filet mignon. I slid into a red leather booth, relishing the hush that follows a day of camera flashes and couture.

If anyone was still talking about my coat, I could not hear them over the sizzle of my steak arriving at the table.

Why Steak and Protein Are Not the Enemy

Here is where weight-loss wisdom enters the picture: a fine steak is not your enemy. In fact, protein and weight loss go hand in hand.

Protein satisfies. It steadies blood sugar. And if you savor it slowly, it stops those late-night snack cravings cold.

The trick is to let the steak be the star. Skip the mountain of creamed spinach that could feed a family of four. Focus on the protein itself.

As Harvard Health explains, choosing high-quality protein supports satiety, energy, and overall health.

Plant-Based Protein and Weight Loss

If you are vegetarian or vegan, the same principle works. Let lentils, chickpeas, or tofu shine. Do not bury them under bread or butter-laden sides.

Protein, whether animal or plant, nourishes best when savored slowly, without distraction.

The American Heart Association emphasizes healthy proteins as a foundation for long-term balance.

Eat with Presence

So yes, eat the steak. Enjoy every bite. Or let beans, chickpeas, or tofu take the spotlight. Either way, protein will not hurt you.

But above all: enjoy the moment.

And if you happen to be wearing vintage mink while doing it, at least know where the nearest exit is, in case the fashion police follow you to dinner.
